Chapter Ten

It was the slightest sound that woke her from her sleep. She was a very light sleeper, having grown up at war on a war torn and almost fully destroyed world. Her mind automatically ran through the motions of casting an alertness spell, a habit she’d formed over the years of unexpected emergencies calling her from bed. She didn’t really have to think about it, and since it was a spirit spell she wasn’t caught up by the untrained need of casting the tap spells.

Which she did a moment later, all four of them. At rest, without drawing power from them, they’d remain stable indefinitely. It was only when she started drawing power and weaving spells that the three minute timer would start, give or take a few seconds depending on the tap in question. They were all different, and at the moment her water tap would last the longest, since it was the closest one to their… magical pressure on this worldly plane.

She detected four fae right outside the cottage, none of them the one that had sent the hawk, the nature magical signatures were different. She didn’t hesitate. Since she couldn’t weave a subtler and therefore more powerful with less magic multiple element spell, earth magic would normally be her best option when facing other elemental magic for a shield.

But against nature, her instincts had her casting a shield of elemental fire. Fire was nature’s greatest enemy, forest fires a constant threat. It made sense to her that a fire magic shield would consume nature magic attacks with equal facility.

She considered how they could be there, perhaps a witch had helped them to slip past the wards unnoticed. She imagined with nature magic they’d both be ghosts in the forest, and be able to coverup their scents which was one of the major ways a shifter or animal would hunt. However they managed it didn’t matter in the end, all that mattered was they did manage to bypass the wards and the patrols. She imagined Cane wouldn’t be at all happy about that.

She also thought fast about what she should do, while leaving the bedroom. She was pleased to see Olwyn was strapping on his armor and his sword was already drawn and leaning against the couch right next to him. He must’ve heard it too. She heard the sound again, and while wide awake it was obviously one of the fae trying to pick the lock.

Regardless, her thoughts raced as she considered how to handle it. The last thing she wanted to do was burn bridges with other territories. She actually considered just cooperating with them and passing on the warning, but ultimately she rejected it.

If they were to gain refugee status and eventually integrate as citizens, then they would be beholden to Riothaen as their ultimate ruler. She didn’t want to burn bridges, but she felt like cooperating would be seen as a betrayal by Riothaen.

Riothaen needed to learn to trust them, and they would need to be loyal to Riothaen if they were to become his subjects.
